Complex Sentences
A complex sentence has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. A dependent clause is a group of words that cannot stand alone as a sentence. Dependent clauses are joined to independent clauses by subordinating conjunctions, such as after, although, as, as if, as long as, as soon as, because, before, even though, if, so that, since, so that, then, though, unless, until, when, whenever, where, and while.
For example:
  • The cat is black because it has black fur.
  • The dog chases the ball even though it knows it will never catch it.
  • The house is big because it has four bedrooms and three bathrooms.
