Google Begins Introducing Passkeys, a New Way to Log In
Google is starting to roll out a new Passkeys feature, which allows users to log in to websites and apps without remembering passwords. Passkeys are a type of biometric authentication that uses your fingerprint or face scan to verify your identity.
Passkeys are more secure than passwords because they cannot be easily stolen or reused. They are also easier to use because you do not have to remember them. When you sign in to a website or app that supports Passkeys, your device will automatically generate a unique Passkey for that site. The next time you visit the site, your device will automatically sign you in using your Passkey.
Google is working with other tech companies to make Passkeys a standard across the web. Apple, Microsoft, and Mozilla have all announced support for Passkeys.

How Passkeys Work
Passkeys are based on the Web Authentication (WebAuthn) standard. WebAuthn is an open standard that allows websites and apps to authenticate users using biometrics.
When you sign in to a website or app that supports Passkeys, your device will generate a unique Passkey for that site. The Passkey will be stored on your device and will be encrypted using your fingerprint or face scan.
The next time you visit the site, your device will automatically sign you in using your Passkey. You will not have to enter your fingerprint or face scan again.

Benefits of Passkeys
Passkeys offer a number of benefits over passwords, including:
  • Security: Passkeys are more secure than passwords because they cannot be easily stolen or reused.
  • Ease of use: Passkeys are easier to use than passwords because you do not have to remember them.
  • Cross-platform support: Passkeys are supported by all major platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
How to Use Passkeys
To use Passkeys, you must use a device that supports them. Currently, Passkeys are supported by Chrome 83+ on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
To sign in to a website or app that supports Passkeys, follow these steps:
  1. Visit the website or app.
  2. Click on the "Sign in" button.
  3. Select the "Use Passkey" option.
  4. Your device will prompt you to scan your fingerprint or face.
  5. You will be signed in once your fingerprint or face has been scanned.
Conclusion
Passkeys are a new way to log in to websites and apps that are more secure and easier to use than passwords. Google is working with other tech companies to make Passkeys a standard across the web. If you use a device that supports Passkeys, I encourage you to try them out.
